Medical call near Gate 1 turns into assault charge

28-year-old Benzel Smith was charged with assault and resisting arrest after a medical call for service turned violent in the back of an ambulance.

On May 15th, officers responded to a call for service at 113 Tandy Drive. There, Benzel Smith asked to be taken to the hospital for self-harming thoughts. Smith was taken into the ambulance when he began fighting the medical personnel.

Police tried to help, but Smith began resisting them by holding his hand tightly to his chest and tensing up. They tried to calm Smith when he started grabbing the officers and EMS workers. He headbutted one of the EMS workers trying to restrain him. EMS was able to sedate him once he was restrained. He was taken to Tennova Hospital.

Benzel Smith was arrested and charged with assault and resisting arrest. His bond was set at $10,000.
