Mother caught driving impaired with 1-year-old child in vehicle

32-year-old Iliana Mejias was charged with reckless endangerment, driving under the influence, first offense, and open container when she was caught driving impaired with her 1-year-old child in the vehicle.

On August 21st, Officer Michael Hickmon witnessed a silver vehicle in front of him swerve out of their lane 10 times, one time forcing a truck to change lanes. Officer Hickmon stated that when the vehicle came to a stop at the red light at Ft. Campbell and Jack Miller Boulevard it stopped approximately 50 feet from the vehicle in front of them. The officer initiated a traffic stop at 2631 Ft. Campbell Blvd and when the vehicle came to a stop it jumped forward as if the breaks were applied too hard.

At this point, the officer discovered the driver, Iliana Mejias, and her 1-year-old child in the vehicle. Officer Hickmon advises that Mejias smelled of an alcoholic beverage, had watery eyes, and slurred speech. Mejias admitted to the officer that she had 2 margaritas at a dinner prior to the stop. The officer asked her if she was willing to perform standardized field sobriety tests to ensure that she was able to drive safely to which she agreed to. The officer advised that Mejias performed the tasks poorly. During Officer Hickmon’s search, he found a solo cup in the center console that was full of a brownish liquid that had a strong alcoholic scent to it. Once Mirandized, Mejias refused to speak further.

Iliana Mejias was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, driving under the influence, and open container. Her bond was set at $13,000.
