Moody and forgetful man charged after hit-and-run; found with marijuana during search

30-year-old Darnell Simms was charged with his second DUI, possession of marijuana, driving an unregistered vehicle, leaving the scene with damage, and driving without a driver’s license after leaving the site of an accident, and an illicit substance was detected in his vehicle by a police service dog.

On November 8th, Clarksville Police Officer Gibbons responded to a crash at 711 Power Street after two vehicles collided with one another and left the scene before they arrived. Per the affidavit, dispatch described one of the vehicles as a black Chevrolet sedan. Officers in the area of Walker Street and B Street observed a vehicle matching the description, at which time they ordered the driver to stop and exit the vehicle.

The driver was detained and identified as Darnell Simms. He reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes and the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. During their interaction, officers noticed that he was having mood swings and exhibited noticeable signs of forgetfulness. The odor of marijuana was reported to be emanating from the vehicle. Officer Mefford told other officers that the police dog showed signs confirming that there were narcotics in the vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle, marijuana was found. A computer search also found that Darnell was driving with an expired license.

Darnell Simms was arrested and with his second DUI, possession of marijuana, driving an unregistered vehicle, leaving the scene with damage, and driving without a driver’s license. He was released on an $11,000 bond.
