Man charged after bruised wife flees to officer’s apartment; she turns to Venmo for escape

26-year-old Kenneth Hamby was charged with domestic assault after his wife claimed he accused her of cheating, kicked down her bathroom door, and punched her three times in the face when she attempted to finalize their divorce.

On December 3rd, Clarksville Police Officer Matthew Harrington responded to reports of a domestic assault at the Autumn Winds Apartments on 851 Ted Crozier State Road Boulevard, apartment 1223. When the officer arrived, he spoke with Kelsey Hamby, who had been waiting with an off-duty officer. Kelsey stated she and her husband, Kenneth Hamby, got into a physical altercation over a divorce she was attempting to finalize.

She told officers Kenneth believed she was cheating on him and asked for her phone and other devices. She stated she initially declined, but she wanted to keep the peace, so she let him look through it. He started to scream at her, and Kelsey stated she locked herself in her bathroom and contacted authorities. Kenneth reportedly kicked the door and punched her in the face three times. Kelsey was able to flee to an off-duty officer’s apartment until help arrived.

The officer observed cuts and bruises on her face. She was later transported to Tennova for treatment. Officer Harrington did not speak with Kenneth because he already fled the scene. Attempts were made to reach him by phone, but he did not answer.

On December 4th, Kenneth Hamby was arrested and charged with domestic assault. He was later released on a $5,000 bond.
