Arizona man and 16-year-old accomplice wreck grandmother’s car

22-year-old Cody Yates was charged with joyriding, possession of marijuana, unlawful drug paraphernalia, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, driving on a suspended license, and leaving the scene of an accident after he crashed his grandmother’s car near Stone Terrace Apartments with a 16-year-old accomplice.

On May 15th, Officer Adam Price was dispatched to a wreck at the meeting of Tracy Lane and McCormick Lane. Those who witnessed the wreck claimed that a blue sedan had crashed at the intersection of the two roads and the two inside the car had begun to flee the scene. Officer Price intercepted the two males near the crossing of 101st Airborne Division Parkway and Whitfield Road. A witness identified the two as the driver and passenger of the sedan, the former being Cody Yates, while the passenger was identified as a 16-year-old juvenile, per the affidavit.

Yates and the juvenile claimed the other was driving, both agreeing that the vehicle belonged to the delinquent’s grandmother. Neither were given her permission to drive the sedan. Price began to search the juvenile, finding a baggie of a green, leafy substance. The juvenile claimed the substance to be marijuana, of which he purchased from Yates.

Following a search of Yates and his backpack, a pen containing THC oil was recovered. In the vehicle, Price discovered a glass pipe between both front seats, of which Yates and the juvenile denied possession. The NCIC revealed Yates to be driving on a suspended license from Arizona, on accounts of failing to comply with a traffic summons from August 2019.

Cody Yates was arrested and charged with joyriding, possession of marijuana, unlawful drug paraphernalia, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, driving on a suspended license, and leaving the scene of an accident. His bond was set at $15,000.
