Man charged after Mapco employee sees him tug on door handles; drives off in someone’s car

31-year-old Charles Wright was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, evading arrest, and resisting arrest after a Mapco employee witnessed him trying to enter more than one vehicle in the parking lot.

On November 12th, Clarksville Police Officer Brown responded to reports of vehicle theft at a Mapco located at 380 Warfield Boulevard. An employee at the location was in the parking lot when he spotted someone trying to get into a vehicle. He described the person as a white male with a red beard, wearing shorts and tennis shoes. The employee reported he watched the man, later identified as Charles Wright, fail to break into the first vehicle. He then walked to a 2010 Ford Fusion and gained access through the driver’s side door.

The employee stated they yelled at Charles Wright and approached the vehicle as he drove off. While Officer Brown was still at the Mapco taking the employee’s report, a call was received reporting a white male with a red beard acting suspiciously at 787 Weatherly Drive. Officer Brown made contact with Charles Wright in front of the given address. The officer noted Charles made numerous conflicting statements. He initially stated he drove there in a Jetta, then claimed someone in a Honda Civic dropped him off. The stolen Ford Fusion was located next door on the side of 793 Weatherly Drive.

Employees at 787 Wetherly Drive stated he went into their bathroom and left a set of keys inside of it. The keys found belonged to Charles’ girlfriend. Her vehicle was discovered to be still at the Mapco. Charles attempted to run from officers during the investigation and tensed up his arms while they were attempting to take him into custody. Charles’ person was searched and officers located the work ID card for the owner of the stolen Ford Fusion and her iPhone. The owner of the Fusion stated she did not know Charles and he did not have permission to enter or drive her vehicle.

Charles Wright was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, evading arrest, and theft of a motor vehicle. He is currently jailed in lieu of a $35,000 bond.
