Montgomery County Jail inmate commits suicide

An inmate at the Montgomery County Jail hanged herself after reportedly being returned from the hospital where she was treated for an overdose. She was transported to Vanderbilt after being found, where she was placed on life support, and then pronounced dead.

According to a source, inmate Jacqueline Smith had attempted to overdose on drugs while incarcerated. She was then taken to the hospital and later released back to the jail, where she hung herself. Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement from Captain Steve Heise:

“We did have an attempted suicide within our jail by an inmate on September 9th, 2020. The individual was transported to Vanderbilt where the individual was placed on life support and then passed away on September 12th, 2020. This is still an open active investigation and at this time no other details can be released.”

Jacqueline Smith had been arrested on September 3rd and charged with a methamphetamine violation, resale of cocaine, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $81,000, which she was unable to post.
