Man surrenders malnourished puppy to Animal Control; charged with animal cruelty

44-year-old Johnny Evitts was charged with cruelty to animals after failing to give adequate food, water, and shelter to a litter of puppies.

On October 2nd, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department was contacted by Animal Control Officer Adria Reif, who advised that they had received two puppies from family members of Johnny Evitts, who arranged the surrender earlier that day by phone.

She noticed that one of the puppies was abnormally thin and had several puncture wounds on her legs. When the officer arrived and looked at Miami, he confirmed the condition of the puppies. They sent Miami to St. Bethlehem Animal Clinic where she was examined by Dr. Cynthia Miller, who stated the dog suffered from malnutrition, intestinal parasites, and chronic diarrhea.

The punctures on her leg were from fighting with the other puppies over the small amount of space provided to them. Animal Control and MSCO had taken several trips to Evitts’ home at 1823 Cunningham Ridge and provided him tips on how to give proper water, food, and shelter for the puppies.

After failing to provide proper care for the dogs, although he received a written warning by Deputy Cameron Owens on July 25th, Evitts was taken into custody.

44-year-old Johnny Evitts was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. He was later released on a $5,000 bond.
