Officer Mefford observed Adkins in the Nissan traveling north on Paradise Hill Road. He made contact with Adkins after he had exited the vehicle and could detect the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from him. He also noted Adkins had blood-shot watery eyes, slurred speech, and was unsteady on his feet. He consented to a field sobriety test, in which he performed poorly. A later search of the vehicle revealed an open Smirnoff Ice Screwdriver in the center cup holder, partially consumed. He consented to a blood draw and was taken to Sango Emergency Room.

John Adkins was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and open container violation. He was later released on a $2,500 bond.
