Concerned son spoons up the truth about mother’s drug use

40-year-old Shelly Gerlach was charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect, possession of heroin, and drug paraphernalia after her oldest son called police concerned about his mother’s drug use around his younger brother.

On September 26th, Clarksville Police Officer Adair responded to Hunterchase Apartments at 1897 Madison Street on a child abuse call. The 20-year-old son of Shelly Gerlach called the CPD concerned that his mother was using heroin again. While on the phone with the officers, Gerlach’s 11-year-old son came out of Gerlach’s bedroom with a spoon that had heroin residue. The officers checked on the welfare of Gerlach. When Gerlach was awoken, she had an open needle on the bed in between her legs.

The 20-year old son stated to the officers that Gerlach shared the bed with the 11-year-old. Officer Adair stated they collected the spoon and needle as evidence. When Gerlach’s wallet was searched for an ID, a red folded piece of paper was found. Inside the red paper, a crumbled gray-brown substance that looked to be heroin was inside. She stated that it was heroin. The 11-year-old remains in the care of the 20-year-old brother.

Shelly Gerlach was arrested and charged with aggravated child neglect and abuse, possession of heroin, and unlawful drug paraphernalia. She was freed on a $30,000 bond.
